New York Unveils Portal for Citizens to Submit Immigration Images After Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state AG has rolled out a fresh reporting form encouraging citizens to submit images and footage of ICE operations around New York. This move follows a day after a significant immigration operation disrupted NYC's Chinatown, triggering large-scale demonstrations.
US Citizens Held During Raid
A US congressman revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were arrested and detained for "about 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Protests broke out in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Every New Yorker has the right to reside free from terror," the AG stated in a statement.
"For those who saw and recorded ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to submit that footage with us. We are pledged to assessing these accounts and evaluating any violations of law."
Form Details
The portal provides spaces to upload visual evidence of the incident, as well as a field to specify geographic details. When submitting, users must tick a option that acknowledges that "the office might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or public report."
Information about the ICE Action
The enforcement action, which witnesses say featured over fifty federal agents, happened in a famous area of the city where imitation purses, items, goods and additional items are regularly available en masse – typically to tourists.
Footage of the incident show numerous covered and weaponized officers zip-tying and detaining a man, and shoving away witnesses. Masses of New Yorkers trailed the officers down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was also seen moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
In a midweek briefing held with the rights organization, the congressman, a Democrat, said that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be arrested for no reason." He noted the persons were freed on the following day with no charges filed.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he stated. "This represents a military-style operation to create conflict. It is purely a pretext to provoke conflict for the government to bring in the armed forces to prevent conflict that they have created."
Broad Criticism
Fury over the immigration operation escalated – each of the mayoral candidates condemned the raid, along with NY's governor.
"Once again, the current administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It must stop," one mayoral candidate declared.
NYC advocacy organizations voiced concern as well.
"ICE descended on Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, hooded officers and riot gear to target local sellers working to survive. This action had nothing to do with community security and focused completely on frightening communities and communities," stated the head of a advocacy group.
ICE Policies
Official guidelines forbids the arrest of American nationals and the organization has said it will not apprehend citizens. Yet, independent reporting has discovered that over 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents since the start of the current administration.
Ongoing Trend
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in the state and across the US lately.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the existing leadership. Protests against immigration enforcement are commonplace including allegations of violence and abusive practices.
Most recently, a letter filed by legal entities alleged inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
