Israelis mark second remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
People have assembled across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A senior delegate familiar with the negotiations indicated that an evening round of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.
The representative explained the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the both parties.
Key Matters in Discussions
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war administration of the territory
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until every captive return not a single person will be secure."
"After we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to recover," she continued.
Near the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Protester one woman remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israelis prefer the hostilities to finish in return for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of the gathering, mourners gathered to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the urban center, attacks were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, area and locality areas and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening arrives, the fear appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me all night."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."
Health Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had received the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area said additional dead people had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south, medical staff said.
